Everything You Need to Know About Sliding Door Track - A Complete Guide to Tracks 100kg to 2000kg

A Guide to Sliding Door Tracks

What is a Sliding Door Track?

A Sliding Door Track is the key part of any sliding door system. It is a long metal channel which is installed on the top of a door frame, guiding the door's movement.

What is the best type of Sliding Door Track?

While there are many styles of sliding door track, our range focuses on enclosed track. Although different styles can have different benefits, typically aesthetic, enclosed track is superior in the following ways:

  • In enclosed track, the trolley travels inside the track, meaning there is no risk of the trolley coming off the track. With other systems, where the trolley is mounted on top, the trolley will rise off the track if the door is lifted. This could cause the door to jam or even fall off the track completely.
  • Because the trolley travels inside the track, the track protects the trolleys from weather, dust and debris. This means your door will slide more smoothly and last longer, as the trolley is protected. In other systems dust and dirt can settle on the track, causing the door to jerk or jolt as the trolley rolls over these obstacles.
  • The enclosed track creates a seamless look, as the trolleys, stops and any mechanisms such as soft close units can be hidden inside the track. This creates an aesthetic look on the outside, while maintaining high functionality inside, meaning you can get the most from your sliding door set up.

What is the best material for Sliding Door Track?

Our Sliding Door Track is available in a range of Galvanised, Stainless Steel or Aluminium. Each material has it's own benefits, including different load ratings.

  1. Galvanised Track is used inside or outside, offering good protection from the elements. This track is suited to all outside areas, as long as they are not too close to the ocean, where the harsh salt spray will cause it to corrode. Galvanised Track is available for doors from 100kgs to 2000kgs
  2. Stainless Steel Track is typically used in coastal environments, kitchens and laboratories, which benefit most from stainless steel's superior corrosion resistance, moisture resistance and durability.
  3. Aluminum Track is lightweight and strong, making it suitable for indoor spaces. Our aluminum track is anodized, increasing it's corrosion resistance and durability, with a stylish finish.

What length sliding door track do I need?

In most set ups, the track length is twice the width of the door. For example if your door was 900mm wide, you would get a track 1.8m long. With set ups such as pocket sliding doors, this is most suitable. At times longer tracks are used to slide the door completely out of the way of the opening.

How heavy does my sliding door track need to be?

The load rating of the track should always be more than the weight of your door. For example if your door was 80kgs, our 100kg Sliding Door Track would be suitable. You can increase this if there are other concerns such as high wind loads or you are looking for a specific trolley type that is only with another range.

Keep in mind that a sliding door system is like a chain, it is only as strong as it's weakest link. Remember to carefully check load ratings of trolleys as well, as the trolley's load rating may be less than the track.
